This is unworthy of you, 404. There's a real story here about how Proton marketing plays fast and loose with the level of protection they offer. For you to imply that they eagerly 'helped' the FBI by doing what is legally required of them is just as misleading.

@willegible @404mediaco Another worthwile story could’ve been to critically examine how true the ”Swiss privacy laws” marketing really is when Switzerland cooperates with foreign governments in this way.

But 404 has made it clear they think Proton complying with a mandatory legal demand from the Swiss government is equivalent to them willingly collaborating with the FBI, so that’s the angle we’re getting apparently. Really don’t understand this logic.

The headline "Proton Mail Helped FBI Unmask Anonymous ‘Stop Cop City’ Protester" is obviously wrong, as you mentioned by yourself further down.
Proton Mail fulfilled they duty by law to hand requested data to the Swiss government. What leverage have Proton on the Swiss government in terms of what they are doing with those data afterwards? As well, they do not claim that such Meta data are encrypted. Don't blame Proton for things, they have no leverage on it, even in your headlines.

@404mediaco While email cannot ever be secure nor private enough for sensitive tasks, I honestly encourage everyone to learn how to create and manage GPG keys and, if using a custom domain, how to set Web Key Directory. This way, everyone gains almost everything Proton Mail offers.
