The biggest change to voting in Republican election bill could become a burden for many US voters - Futurology Today

Lemmy

I live in New Hampshire and when I went to register for the 1984 election, I took my birth certificate and driver’s license and my phone and PSNH bills (to determine local residency). It was later (in the 90’s I think?) that there was a push to make it easier to register - that was about the time that MTV was pushing the “Rock the Vote” that helped the pro-business liberals - Bill Clinton - into office with the youth vote.

After I moved to where I’ve been living for the last few decades, I did the same thing - went into City hall and registered with the same documents AND a passport which I got in 1991.

Historically - The GOP has been pushing behind the scenes for decades to put more roadblocks for people to vote since George Bush Sr. lost in '92 to Clinton. (The GOP had a seething hate for him as he was more pro-business than they were and could not stop him by claiming he was a “socialist” liberal. Was part of why they went so apeshit with the whole Monica Lewisnky thing… it was all they had…)

It is imperative that everyone voting get their birth certificate in hand, and have a passport - it’s a document that is valid for a decade and that works out to less than 20 bucks a year… They are MORE than worth it for flying and travel across the country.

And women… FFS if you get married - DO NOT CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME! Just make it easier on you to register or deal with aything related to your name. Keep the one you were born with.

I did not change my name when I got married, and it’s not a big deal, in spite of what the in-laws may squeak about.
