I’ve never used any of the LLM chatbots, avoided them even in the early days, because they had all the hallmarks of a major cognitive and psychological hazard from the very beginning.
“I’m not gonna use this shit until I can be sure it won’t mess me or others up” is an entirely reasonable position to take, but for some reason it makes even those who are otherwise lukewarm on the tech quite angry.
@baldur If you could walk next door and visit another country, why would you try to build an opinion about that country based on the reports of others?
Trying a Chatbot is easy and harmless and they are amazing at what they do, and if you spend a lot of time doing research on the internet for anything, it is a far superior tool. It works as an IT help desk, as a tax advisor, even as an attorney. At a minimum it organizes your thoughts and does an incredible job of organizing the info landscape.
Yeah, works like a charm.
In June 2023, a federal judge in Manhattan faced an unusual problem when two lawyers submitted a legal brief citing six court cases that did not actually exist. The cases were completely fabricated by ChatGPT, complete with realistic citations, plausible holdings, and convincing legal reasoning. When confronted, one of the lawyers testified that he had asked ChatGPT whether the cases were real, and the AI had said yes. This was not an isolated incident, as courts across multiple jurisdictions have flagged similar issues with AI-generated case citations in legal filings.
@Landa That's really a silly example which doesn't support any rational assessment of the usefulness or quality of information available from AI tools. Even the title of your citation from 2023! gives away your flawed conclusion. The title says "Lawyer" cited fake cases.
Any YouTube "Ai for dummies" video will tell you how to ask for citations in your chats. If you don't know how to think critically, your thinking will not be improved by Ai. That's not the test.
