OTD 1996 (30 years!): The Nokia 9000 "Communicator" - clamshell smart phone.
@aka_pugs worked with more than a couple of Sun hardware engineers BITD who loved those as portable serial consoles 👍
@aka_pugs I wanted one of these so badly back in the day, but couldn't afford one!
@aka_pugs I had a 6210 back in the day (the one on the right on 2nd pic) and the 9000 Communicator was a grail phone back then!
@maxmortillaro @aka_pugs That‘s a 6310i actually. The first 6-series phone with GPRS and Bluetooth.
@nblr Yes I remember that mine was a 6110 in fact.
@nblr Den hattest Du, iirc?
@publictorsten Ich hatte einen 9110. Aber auch erst recht spät als Gebrauchtgerät. Praktisch um auf dem Schulweg zu faxen.
@aka_pugs With a pretty wild choice for an embedded „soc“ from today’s perspective, but in 1996 an 80386 was one of the few viable options.
@aka_pugs These were amazing. I worked with a guy a Nokia who had one. I had drawn a diagram I wanted to show him… so he told me to fax it to his cell number. 🤯 Next time we met in person he showed it to me. It was just a scanned image on the little screen… because of course a fax is nothing more than a scanned image. To see it on a handheld was astounding though.
