The province of Ontario has purchased part of the rail that will be used for the Northlander train, which will come in service within the next few years. This should allow to prioritize passenger service as opposed to freight.

That purchase alone is 25% of the distance of the future Timmins <> Toronto train

@jerome There are now 2 distinct Newmarket subs. One between Toronto and Barrie ()orange), and one between Washago and North Bay (cyan). Barrie to Washago was destroyed years ago.

The purchase is for the Washago to North Bay part.

So Northlander travels:
Union Station,
Bala-Go (to CN York)
Bala-CN (from CN York)
Newmarket-ON (from Washago to North Bay)

Bala is CN's transcontinental sub, so the Northlander will still be stuck with freight leaving Toronto gto Washago.

@jerome Metrolinx bought the Newmarket section between Toronto and Barrie. The Northlander won't travel on any of it. But will travel on the Metrolinx section of Bala sub between Thornhill and where it meets the Kingston sub at the Don River to get to Union.
