How do I find obscure sub-lemmies?
How do I find obscure sub-lemmies?
Do sense trepidation?
spoilerSmaller niche communities people might like might not have the user outreach to make it out of the new filter.
This also gives smaller communities a chance to grow.
If we go by def 3 of MW:
3 : relatively unknown: such as a : remote, secluded an obscure village b : not prominent or famous an obscure poet c : requiring knowledge that is restricted to a limited group a movie full of obscure references to pop culture
Just close your eyes, move your mouse and click and no matter where you end up, you’ll have found one.
The common term is “communities” or “comms”, I think.
I would try to look for servers dedicated to the subject you’re interested in and see what communities they have. Keep in mind that there are much fewer users on Lemmy than Reddit, so there might not be a specialized community for a given subject. And if there is, it might be very small/inactive.
Ah thanks.
And, yeah, thank you. I’m hopeful a smaller user base will be a feature, not a bug.
Sometimes you have to grow your own community… a smaller user base requires much more individual participation.
Be persistent ♡
Theyre called communities, which I often shorten to “comm” or “comms”. Mbin calls them magazines. Not sure if piefed has its own name for things

These two comms, and searching manually for keywords related to stuff I’m interested in. In the thunder and Jerboa apps that pulls up relevant communities
A few communities that might be helpful:
- New Communities - A place to post new communities all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.
- Community Promo - Promote your favourite communities and ask about communities that you are looking for!
- Trending Communities - Daily post by a bot highlighting trending communities.
- Lemmy Directory - This community has bots making regular posts showcasing best content from communities in given categories to help promote them.
- Find a Community - A community to find other communities in any of the Lemmy instances.
(These were copied from a post I made in a while back to get it up to date after the original mod disappeared).

You can change the software in the top left to switch to PieFed Explorer [https://lemmyverse.net/piefed/communities] or Mbin Explorer [https://lemmyverse.net/mbin/magazines] (I believe there are plans to have a combined search in the future) Fediverse Observer [https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/] - Find a Lemmy instance near you, or view instance lists, maps, or stats. Can also be used with other Fediverse software including PieFed [https://piefed.fediverse.observer/] and Mbin [https://mbin.fediverse.observer/]. Some Fediverse software, including Mbin, Friendica, and Mastodon, uses # tags to help with discovery on the microblogging side. Mastodon also treats community names as tags in a given post, e.g. posts in both [/c/] and [/c/] having the # fediverse tag when propagating to there. ## Communities for other questions [/c/] - Questions about Lemmy software/development [/c/] - Questions about Piefed software/development [/c/] - Questions about any topic that you need help with [/c/] - Open-ended questions to prompt discussion For support with a specific instance (e.g. login/account issues, requests to mod), check in your instance’s local communities to see if there is a help/support community, such as [/c/] for lemmy.world ---- The above was compiled to try to share active communities and resources to help with discovery. Some inactive communities were excluded, but could be added if they become active again. Please leave a comment if you want to add anything, or have any suggestions!
Ahh-- that’s the program I use. This actually highlights my problem with federation*. It seems like there’s gotta be something between “customize everything” and "customize nothing."
