Just a reminder that once-upon-a-time when entertainment streaming services began, the idea was by paying a monthly fee, you could get ad-free streaming.
No longer: We've been Trojan-horsed. Now you pay a monthly fee but still have to watch ads, or you have to pay ANOTHER monthly fee to avoid them.
@petergleick I’m so glad that Apple TV hasn’t succumbed to this yet, though it may well at some point. That’ll be a sad day, because it so sucks on those other platforms. 😕
@GuyNamedBrian @petergleick Apple TV still tries to make you watch a programming promo before starting whatever you selected. I consider that a step onto the slippery slope of advertising. Fortunately it can be skipped, for now.
@fskornia @petergleick True, though I sort of expect any service to do a bit of promoting of their other shows. And thankfully, there’ll usually shippable, at least for now. But yes, it’s definitely a potential slippery slope from there into full-blown advertising in shows.
@GuyNamedBrian @petergleick
There are ads in the F1 broadcasts on AppleTV (but not in the F1TV app)
@neverbeaten @petergleick Same with MLS, but I expect that with live TV, especially sports. It’s when it interrupts a streaming show or movie that wasn’t really set up to have ads in it that it peeves me, and what I’m hoping Apple TV avoids.

@petergleick

How long before each tier of extra fee just buys "x" minutes of ad-free per month?

@petergleick

Pirate! Pirate everything.😁

@petergleick Some telly streaming services appear to have started doing that.

WTF?

If I want telly-with-ads I can watch that for free, why on earth would I want to pay for it?

@ppatel @petergleick Yep. Its no better than Cable TV, I guess with the exception you can at least watch it on your schedule rather than theirs. Still...
@petergleick Happened with cable TV as well. You'd think we'd learn...
@petergleick Anything to slow the piracy. But then, as it always goes, they had to to get greedy. How can they possibly pass up those captive eyeballs? So guess what's on the rise again? *shrugs* Your move, Streaming Mega-Conglomerates.

@petergleick well i'm back to torrents, wrote a nice little media server and chilling out

Kudos to Piratebay though, to survive and win lawsuits in these times, phew!

@petergleick Just this week, Paramount+ started doing that cursed replacement of the Apple TV screen saver with an ad. Luckily it doesn't marquee, but I still want to enjoy my platform's amazing screensavers, not what a certain streaming service forces you to experience.
