This photograph from our Ralph Curcio Slide Collection shows a train of R38 subway cars crossing the South Channel Bridge in 2006.
Manufactured by the St. Louis Car Company, R38 cars were the first #NYCsubway cars to arrive with air-conditioning installed and the second cars to be built with stainless steel exteriors. The cars featured fiberglass seating, fluorescent lighting, and aluminum roofs.
The R38s were retired between 2008 and 2009, but cars 4028 and 4029 live on as a treasured part of the Transit Museum’s vintage fleet. #TransitTrivia: How do you tell an R38 from an R32?
