If I were to make a new specialized liveslak with items from my repo, what would everyone like to see shipped on the system & available in a live environment?

I’m interested in what people would like to see (if anything) because I really have no idea anymore, there’s too many cool things. But so much doesn’t translate so well for a live setup without personalized config files.

So what’s worth the effort?

Or instead of a live, what about a specialized installer with select base package sets and my additions included? (Which I realize is basically like endeavour is to arch) but I don’t know what else to ship to get people to explore things.
@jloc0 I'd say, in general, a liveslak with niri and dms etc would be sth people would like to explore Slackware with? That's becoming a new feature set that's quite common (Pika, Cachy, KaOS) as an intro into the shiny world of WM's. Next to that, a new installer, with selectable pkg sets, for Slackware is something that advances usage of Slack even more. It's a bit like my Slackware Tilers setup, with Sway, Niri and Mango. And is long overdue from a Slackware perspective anyway.

@thesaigoneer I have local builds with plasma-slim & dms on there I’ve been playing with. I still do like the flatpak/brew idea as well but that’s a whole different world really.

As for the installer, you can choose sets/packages already (live can’t cuz of the way it’s designed) but the official one does that. But it’s not live, so it’s a different story.

@jloc0 Yes, and those sets are very Slacky anyway. Possibly Calamares depends on systemd, then we should definitely forget it 😝
@thesaigoneer no, it can work with sysvinit but I never dug deep enough to figure out how to integrate it with slackware itself. It runs, I know that much I used to have a build for it but I’m pretty sure that’s long gone info. When something annoys me, it’s to the rm gods it goes. 😆
@jloc0 That flatbrew (and leaving qt5 in the dust) is still a great project to pursue (he mentioned, without mentioning his self-interest 😜)

@thesaigoneer my local install even went further and removed qt5 from every package in slackware, patching where necessary for qt6 and just living a general qt5-bloat free existence. 😆

I feel that if I pursued that I may end up with something really cool and not incredibly far off of slack itself, but in the end, plasma 6 will be in slackware… so it’s not anything special. Then, it’s just a gimped install with some extras. 🫠

@jloc0 Aren't they all gimped installs with some extras? 😝
@jloc0 Come to think of it: a Calamares installer for Slackware? Now, that would be something. With encryption 😅

@thesaigoneer I was toying with calamares a few years ago and ended up throwing in the towel on it. But I think it’s been looked at by snuk for his systemd project, I’ll have to look into it.

I’m torn on stuff like that— it takes the slack out of slack to me. I also don’t know a thing about encryption so that’s not my wheel house either lol

There’s some new stuff out there I’ve avoided looking at but maybe I should dig in to some of it, may prove exciting in that area!
