I recently read on Humanware's Facebook page that the BrailleNote Evolve will ship with a six-month subscription to JAWS.
@DavidGoldfield I thought you could just install your own copy of Jaws on an evolve. I thought you could install any Windows program you wanted to on the evolve. What’s the difference between our copy of jaws and the one that they want to get us to pay for? And what is that subscription going to cost?
@pfhj2000 Bear in mind that I don't represent Humanware or the Evolve product line. That being said, there should be no difference between the instance of JAWS you're currently running and the instance of JAWS being offered by Humanware, since the Evolve is running Windows 11 Pro. If you already have your own JAWS license, you would just activate your own license on the Evolve, rather than using the supplied trial license from Vispero. Think of it this way; I bought a Dell laptop a few years ago, which came with a trial license of Microsoft 365. I could have activated the license offered by Dell but since I already purchased my own M365 license, I just activated that license on the laptop, bypassing Dell's trial license with my own.
@DavidGoldfield @pfhj2000 Hi David, this is pretty much correct. The Humanware team is yet to be fully informed about the implications moving ahead, but from what we've been told so far this is pretty much it.
@DavidGoldfield Yeah, David. The first thing I thought is maybe that there was a different version of jaws that would run on the evolve. But as I think about it, maybe it’s just a way for those who are not jaws users to get a version of Jaws to work on their new notetakers. I wonder will it be a strip down version of Jaws to work better with the evolve? And I wonder what the cost will be?
@pfhj2000 No, I highly doubt that. The Evolve is running Windows 11 Pro. There's no reason to assume that the trial license of JAWS being offered by Vispero is any different from the installations of JAWS on other Windows devices. Win11 Pro is Win11 Pro, whether it's running on an Evolve or on my Dell laptop and the same will likelly be the case for JAWS. Yes, this trial license is really ideal for users who don't already own a JAWS license, just as the trial licenses for Microsoft 365 are for those who don't have their own M365 license. If you buy an Evolve and you have a current JAWS license, just install your own license. Users who are using another screen reader have six months to use JAWS on an Evolve. After the six month license expires, they have the option to purchase their own license from Vispero and, in this case, probably Humanware.
@DavidGoldfield Thanks David. When I first saw the note from Humanware, I was concerned. Because I thought maybe there was gonna be some kind of a stripped down version of jaws that worked better on the evolve. I’m really excited about the evolve. This is something I wanted years ago. Even though it’s rather expensive, I’m gonna try to figure out how to get one, but I would like to see more about it. I hope they’ll be some kind of a technology fair near my home here in Fresno, where I can get my hands on one and play with it a little bit.
