The internet regulators in general, and UK as a country specifically, continue to get everything absolutely backwards when it comes to age restrictions and age verification.

The solution is *never* to have random sites you have no reason to trust be able to inspect your full government ID. The correct thing to do is for the government to provide a government-stamped slip that says "this person is over 18" that contains *no other identifying information*.

The government should not have to know *why* you need that confirmed and the site in question should have no business knowing who you are until you voluntarily choose to share such information with them. Privacy laws should make it impossible for anyone—including the government—to spy on you rather than have everyone pinky swear they won't do it.
