How the EU’s internal borders are growing again

The #Schengen Area was one of the world's largest areas without internal border controls.
While internal border controls were abolished, the intensity of external border protection increased drastically.
Adding to the already ruthless external border regime, several #EU states have now also increased their internal border controls resulting in even more harassment and criminalisation of people on the move.

Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Austria and Slovenia have undermined the Schengen Agreement and implemented border controls.

In 2024, these countries once again declared a supposed ‘state of emergency’ on the grounds that there were too many asylum applications. Even though this is false, as statistics show that the number of applications was falling, not rising, it shows a pattern. A pattern of creating fear, spreading misinformation to fuel a general anti-migration agenda.

These border controls, which have become part of everyday life, are racist and discriminatory.

We demand an immediate end to all border controls!
