Ray Harryhausen's marvelous 2004 statue of David Livingstone in the grounds of the house where he was born in Blantyre just to the south of Glasgow (now home to the David Livingstone Centre). Based on a real event, it shows a lion attacking Livingstone and two African natives. The attack happened in 1844 near the village of Mabotsa in Botswana while LIvingsone was hunting a pride of lions which had been preying on the village’s livestock.

On finding the lions, Livingstone shot the largest male with both barrels, but failed to kill it instantly and while he was reloading, it pounced on him before finally dropping dead. Livingstone’s arm was badly broken, but other than that he was unhurt.

A mounted copy of this print is now available from my online shop at https://www.thisismyglasgow.com/product/david-livingstone-statue-in-blantyre-mounted-size-10-inch-by-12-inch/.

@thisismyglasgow Is it bad that I'm rooting for the lion?
@LappenjammerDieZweite It's one of the aspects I really like about this statue. It doesn't show the human triumphing over the animal, or even Livingstone as the brave hero. Instead, it show the lion bravely fighting back, and Livingstone looking helpless ans terrified. 👍🙂

@thisismyglasgow Thanks for telling us the story.

I of course only knew of Livingstone as "Mr Livingstone I presume".
