SubscribeStar just banned NSFW art of furries with digitigrade legs.

https://subscribestar.adult/prohibited_content

Edit: Page has been updated and that section has been removed.

@sovy Someone on Bsky pointed out a few things that are weird about that page.

  • There are spelling errors. Seriously "tabaco" shouldn't have made past even a rudimentary spell check, but it appears in one of the headings.
  • The terminology in the document is inconsistent. SubscribeStar typically refers to creators in their documents; this page refers to users instead. That inconsistency may seem minor, but it's enough of a difference that it would matter in a legal situation.
  • This prohibited content page isn't linked under the prohibited content heading. Instead, it's only linked under Profile & Account Termination. While this isn't a smoking gun, it is awfully strange that it isn't referenced elsewhere.
  • Nobody received any notification this change was coming. While they don't have any legal or contractual obligation to provide advance notice, it would be truly bizarre for them to make such drastic changes without e-mailing creators or making a blog post.
  • While it is possible these changes are coming and this page just wasn't supposed to go live yet, it's also possible that someone got into their webserver, created that plausible-looking prohibited content page, and started passing it around to scare folks. If it was indeed some 4chan style troll, they clearly succeeded in frightening a lot of people.

We'll be waiting to see what announcement SubscribeStar makes on the website. It would be ludicrous for them to not respond within 24 hours to such a situation. If these changes are legitimate, then it's a dagger through the heart of their community. If they aren't, then we should question their security but (hopefully) can continue to use the service for now.

P.S. @sovy we don't mean to pick on you with such a long reply. Yours was just the first post we saw about this here on the Fediverse. We're honestly worried as well.
