@pseudonym @operationpuppet I don't remember there being AI in A Fire Upon the Deep. Am I misremembering? I'm thinking of the Usenet interactions at the start and end, which were just people posting.
Equally possible I'm misremembering too. I thought the Usenet-like messages were computer sentients on the outer edge of the galaxy, as "processing speed" of intelligence decreased inward.
I think we might both be correct. Organic and inorganic sentients used it, I think
