Talking w/ friends about shortwave recently and was reminded as a 1980s kid I was able to RECEIVE PICTURES FROM SPACE SATELLITES on my Apple ][ w/ a simple circuit & assembly code from a magazine. @todbot can still do this.they not from space sats. They are from landbased maritime radio transmitters.
APT from sats could be had around 136 MHz but needed slightly more kit
Used to do both. Fun.
Also Kyoto news Pravda papers etc. good times
