Tinkering with new!phone.

Good: very snappy (no surprise, one model line “up” + 4-5 years newer, plus usual “new/empty computer always faster” effect. Still!), beautiful screen, iOS 26 only about one third visual shitshow so far (reduced transparency on ofc), camera insanely good esp in low light, extra side buttons very handy.

Most importantly, not scratched (yet) and main side button works (for now).

Bad: TOO BIG. Literally hurts to use, even with two hands. TBD if I get used to it like everyone says or if it becomes a fun new RSI vector; most everyone do not have my nearly child-sized hands 😝

One thing to ponder: one of those phone ring grip…things? What are those even fucking called? And how do they mesh with, yanno, friggin MagSafe? and don't most of them require a full-on case?

And all of that assumes it's a net good to use (eg taking strain off eg the base of my thumb, which is already starting to hurt like the dickens) as opposed to just a marginal gain.

Part of me wants to return this and pray that the upcoming/rumored "fold phone" has a more Mini-sized folded dimensions. But who are we kidding; it will of course be New Regular Phone Sized and unfold into an iPad mini…

One nice thing is that even with their abysmal-for-them QA lately, Apple kit still kinda "just works", as evidenced by me being able to trivially AirDrop photos (even entire albums) between this not-on-my-iCloud-account-yet phone and my (not-yet-on-macOS-26-either) laptop.

I essentially never use AirDrop so I was fully prepared for some dumb shit to come up, but no! It Just Worked™.

@glyph swapping it on/off for charging sounds mildly annoying but I guess one just chucks the popsocket-sans-phone back into wherever the phone normally lives in the interim?

@bitprophet I have a little pop socket holder spot next to each of my chargers, but that happened organically over time. the physical motion of removing and replacing the magsafe accessory itself (both pop sockets and other gizmos I sometimes use) is way less annoying than you might imagine

@corgidad the green's pretty nice, yea, it was that or black/gray this time around - somehow I don't like the odd two-tone feeling blue they got right now.

@bitprophet I can relate to this…I went from 13 mini to 16, and yeah. I miss small phones that fit my small (sometimes arthritic) hands 😢
I’ve found the Torras cases pretty good as a support - the ring rotates and can either act as stand or handhold. Does not impede MagSafe. https://torraslife.com/
Still not as good as my mini though, and I miss not needing a case at all…

@LucidDan @bitprophet I use a quadlock ring for the same purpose. Also used 13 Mini until I just had to upgrade to an 16 Pro. But the cameras in the 16 Pro sure sweetened the deal!

@davew mine has sadly degraded (gummed up side button, screen scratches etc) to the point where I'm just gonna try getting used to the new normal. The minis clearly aren't coming back 😭😭😭
