I dunno if I'd call it "holding civilization together" but I rather hope my old Toshiba is still somewhere playing 1990 MOD music into the music-on-hold port of the switchboard.

coincidentally I had an old Toshiba laptop with a working screen but busted keyboard and goosed battery running in a cupboard under the stairs as a VOIP Telephone Exchange for about a decade, I only decomissioned it a month ago as the hard drive is on the way out and its been replaced by a similar system I built on a cloud VPS which does have the advantage I don't need to open any ports on the firewall of my router at home..
