If you're following the situation in Iran, this one is of interest to you.

Today, we're publishing a story that I find very important for many reasons.

We can prove how the regime in Iran is using facial recognition software to surveil its citizens. We have obtained videos showing the software in a live-scenario, at metro stations in Teheran. We have contracts, and we have had a look at the code, built by the Russian company Ntechlab whose algorithms are deemed to be best-in class.

We spoke with a dozen people who know the regime, either because they had to flee after being imprisoned or from a technical point of view.

All of this, and more, you can find in our reporting, #EyesOfIran. Here are the links:

@hatr The irony of the matter: It seems that the same surveillance infrastructure was used to track down Khamenei and his security detail.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/report-israel-hacked-tehran-traffic-cameras-to-track-khamenei-ahead-of-assassination/

If that's true, it's a warning to all proponents of ubiquitous video surveillance (cough Flock cough): There are certainly two sides to that medal.

@hatr Beim Hashtag fehlt ein Leerzeichen:
#EyesOfIran 😉
@hatr that's not a justifiable reason to bomb an elementary school. And the US at least had the capabilities to target only valid military targets and insure missiles didn't hit civilian targets. Not sure if that survived the ethnic and gender cleansing of the past year.

@hatr If you find it "very important for many reasons", I'm sure you can also name at least one of those reasons.

Because I fail to see how this has to be "of interest" for someone "following the situation in Iran" right now. I get how it could have been "very important" a week ago, but since the actions taken this weekend, focusing on the regime's surveillance of its citizens seems more like a distraction device.

@hatr

@hatr
When does the story about the US Gov doing the exact same to US Citizens drop?

@hatr

That’s terrible, for sure.

And it is further proof that facial recognition as a policy of mass surveillance is a fascist device. Everywhere in the world, in China, in the USA, in Europe, you name it.
