EMF-IX Returns

EMF-IX, the #emfcamp / #emfcamp2026 internet exchange will be returning for EMF 2026.

Complete with our best switch yet (the "no cost spared" Juniper LAN) this will be the best EMF-IX yet, run a personal network or similar? Reserve your (in person) port today: https://emf-ix.benjojo.co.uk/

This year the EMF Camp network itself will be peering on the exchange as well!

@benjojo I want to see the rest of the loopback sign
@xssfox here you go! It's based off a sign on a LINX cabinet I saw once in a data centre
@xssfox god I wish
@benjojo need spanning tree but in peg dhcp style

@xssfox @benjojo do it like mains electrical appliances - make all the cables M->F and put at most one M port on any bridge

(enforcing this in the Linux bridge driver is left as an exercise for the reader)

@xssfox @benjojo now this is reminding me of FDDI and its A/B/M keyed connectors
@xssfox @benjojo And goodness help the 'experts' than disabled spanning tree because they couldn't get RSTP to work with VLANs (hint, SMTP required). No big deal, just the primary protection for a 66kV substation and a gas compression station.
@ingram @xssfox I sure do love safety/life critical Ethernet designs

@benjojo @xssfox Done right, Ethernet is great. A380 and B787 avionics are Ethernet based with strict traffic management and redundant paths. PRP and HSR provide great resilience for industrial applications.

But geez, when you have Muppets that have just rolled their RS485 design to Ethernet with no thought it's very very bad. LAN doesn't work? Disable the firewall. Still doesn't work? Turn the router into a switch. Yeah. I quit that job.

@benjojo Remind me to give you one of these cursed things I accidentally had produced a few years ago.
@momo @benjojo "accidentally had produced"
lol, i want to hear the story behind that :D
@manawyrm @benjojo well, ordered a bunch of lc/pc <> lc/pc, lc/apc <> lc/apc and lc/pc <> lc/apc cables, copy&pasted the spreadsheets for each type and didn't think too much. and the chinese vendor did what I asked.
@momo haha oh my god that's subtle and cursed
@momo @benjojo ftth? Those in NL have one UPC and one APC core 😅
@momo @benjojo oh, that's just the cable to ::1
@momo @992jo @benjojo So basically like the default jumper on a serial adaptor, but faster?
@benjojo But I like them. They help me troubleshoot fiber problems. Less running around (when no switch is connected).
