QGIS 4.0 Norrköping is released!

The wait is over! We are pleased to announce the new major release of QGIS 4.0. Installers for Windows, Linux, and Mac are already out.

What's new? On the surface, existing users should expect to engage with a QGIS experience familiar to what they have come to know and love from previous releases. Under the hood, however, 4.0 introduces significant changes to maintainability and usability.

@qgis Can we expect some issues with existing QGIS 3 plugins? thanks
@juhele yes, if the plugin developers haven't checked for compatibility, some issues are likely
@qgis please please please add some big early adopter warnings!
@cartocalypse what is your concern?
@jakobmiksch @cartocalypse we've slapped an early adopter label on the splash. As always, production use cases should stick to LTRs. It never hurts to remind people of that :-)

@underdarkGIS @jakobmiksch
I meant in announcements (e.g. the blog post and here). Users only see the splash screen *after* they installed 4.0.

Afaik 4.0 is not really meant for random users but people who deliberately want to test a first 4.x release.
From the promotional posts I'd expect any non-expert-in-QGIS-versioning user to get motivated to switch to it ASAP.

@jakobmiksch @cartocalypse it's 100% likely to eat your shapefiles 😜
@qgis Fantastic work, congratulations to everyone involved
@qgis windows installer has software signature warning
I look forward to playing with QGIS4 tomorrow
@qgis Why does the Deb/Ubuntu Quickstart page section say "Simply install the latest stable QGIS (4.0.x Norrköping) in your Debian or Ubuntu without having to edit config files." and then go on to discuss editing sources.list? Should that be a link to flatpak/appimage installs or something? I would like to try 4.0 without touching my 3.x in any way.
@qgis At the moment QGIS4 installer for macOS is still not available.
“Regular version" delivers version 3.44.8
