March 9. 10:30pm. Toronto. I was outside in short sleeves and a light shawl.

Wtf is this weather?

The spring of false hope gets us every year.

@mayintoronto
It gets the red wing blackbirds, too.

They showed up today, tweedling and squawling and clinging to the marsh reeds, all excited to have arrived. And I know, just like every other year, a miserable cold spell is coming on the heels of their arrival, to crush their spirits.

Today they were raucously joyous in the warm sun. By Friday, they will be huddled against the chill, clicking morosely and giving me side eye as though it’s all my fault.

I love the dear idiots so very much, and I look forward to them every year.
