As someone who came to the US as a refugee with political asylum I can't overstate how cruel this is. I was already terrified and had nightmares every day. And here they're telling you that you didn't get to safety after all that, that they will reverse your status on a whim, if they deem it safe for you to return. As Warsan Shire wrote, no one leaves home unless home becomes the mouth of a shark.

Plenty do in fact leave home for other reasons.

I agree this is capricious, cruel and deserves robust criticism, preferably without obvious and unnecessary hostages to fortune (which WILL be taken by the far right).

It’s really weird about this, is from across the pond, it seems like all the very worst immigration policy has been given a southeast Asian face.

It’s hard not to pause for a second and think that they’re putting people who are willing to do this stuff there because of their skin tone to cause everybody to think well it can’t be that bad

@timnitGebru I said this about my own country (in which even social democrats use "strict immigration policies" as a campaign slogan) for the first time years ago: A nation cannot decide to deliberately make its treatment of people from other countries so horrific that someone fleeing war & famine will still think twice about coming, and still call itself civilized.
