Timothee Chalamet has upset opera and ballet fans after saying that artists want to "keep this thing alive" even though "no one cares" about it anymore. Here's @Variety's story on the comments, which were made at a town-hall event during a conversation about releasing movies in theaters. We want to know: Does he have a point? Are these dying arts?

Timothée Chalamet Faces Backlash From Ballet and Opera Communities

Timothée Chalamet is facining backlash after he suggested 'no one cares' about ballet or opera.

@CultureDesk @Variety How about posting a poll asking if people have seen a Chalamet movie?
@Corb_The_Lesser It's a very good point! He wasn't the worst person in "Call Me by Your Name" so he has that going for him!

@Corb_The_Lesser This! I had to google him!

But I love opera and ballet even if I watch it only on ARTE because the next theatre is far away.

@CultureDesk @Variety

@CultureDesk @Variety I admit I do not care about opera, but I have friends who love it and attend livestreams from the Met. I do care about ballet, though. I love it and think contemporary choreographers need more visibility and support!

@CultureDesk

I hope they are not dying. What a terrible thing to say. Opera has been around for more than a century! I use to have a season subscription to the City Opera and Ballet at Lincoln Center when I was in my late 20's-30's. I loved it. It got harder to go so regularly as work/travel demands changed. I saw some of the most fun productions! My favorite Lucia di Lammermoor (besides all the Mozart Operas). I also had a subscription to the NY Philharmonic. So fun!

@CultureDesk I'll put it this way, I live in a third world country and movie theaters show the Met Opera when in season, so I'd say people care.
@CultureDesk @Variety Maybe he's experiencing an existential crisis, triggered by the realisation that, very soon, no one will care about Timothee Chalamet.
@deano He certainly has lost momentum in this year's Oscars race (we're 🤞 for Michael B. Jordan!)
@CultureDesk @Variety
There once was an actor named #Chalamet,
who couldn't stand opera or ballet,
He voiced his opinion out loud,
In front of a really big arts-loving crowd,
Now he goes door-to-door selling bidets.
@CultureDesk @Variety he strikes me as the kind of guy who thinks Paul Atreides is a hero.
