Q&A on the ICJ Advisory Opinion on Climate Change | Lotte Leicht

🌍 The #ClimateCrisis demands urgent action. The science is clear. The law is clear. What we need now is political will‼️ #CouncilofEurope Commissioner for #HumanRights Michael O'Flaherty is calling on CoE member states to step up and lead by example. In a statement issued on March 3 from Strasbourg, Commissioner O'Flaherty urges CoE member states to sponsor and secure the adoption of a strong #UNGA resolution that translates the historic ⚖️ #ICJ Advisory Opinion on #ClimateChange into concrete, multilateral #ClimateAction. In their 2025 ICJ Advisory Opinion judges unanimously determined that states have a legal duty to protect the climate system, limit and address the adverse human rights impacts of #ClimateChange, and that failure to act is a breach of that duty. Now, a UN General Assembly resolution —presented by #Vanuatu and a and Core Group of States— offers a critical opportunity to move from legal blueprint to real accountability and #ClimateJustice: operationalizing state responsibility, increasing transparency, and addressing climate-related loss, damage, and reparations. Council of Europe member states must not let this moment pass. 📅 The UNGA vote is most likely the end of April. The window for support and leadership is now ‼️ 💬 "We have the science and the legal framework; now we need the political will to translate them into action. The future of humanity depends on whether we act." 👉 Read the Commissioner's full statement: https://lnkd.in/gsck8dyX 👉 Read Climate Rights International's ⚖️ #ICJ #ClimateChange Q&A: https://lnkd.in/efTVdCss
