If we had committed to transitioning to a fully sustainable world back in the 1990s, we wouldn't need to worry about the Middle East. We would be free of fossil fuels and would have stable and abundant green energy platforms. Instead, we got oil wars, terrorism, and Middle Eastern despots ruining civilization.
