I vaugely remember back in grade school we had an IIe lab that had a shared storage system that was two 5 1/4 floppy drives and a hard drive; every IIe was able to use the floppy without contention with other computers. Worked transparently.

Really wish I remembered what the name of that thing was.

Apple II Workstation Card

I figured that was the card, I was trying to figure out what the server was; it was one of those mid-80s black wrinkle-coat cases with LEDs showing the status of each workstation read/write and lockout. It's only thirty-some years ago.
