Does anyone know if there's a type of earplugs that can reduce the noise without amplifying your own voice? I don't really care about sound quality for this, I just want to be able to have a conversation in a bar without freaking out at the end of the night. (I don't have many alternative places to socialise in my area that aren't super loud unfortunately.)

Any suggestions?

Not sure if this is what you’re looking for, or if it will do what you want, but I have hearing aids I got from Costco and one of the features is a switchable effect that generates a low level of background noise that supposedly helps your brain focus. I don’t use it because I have a kind of tinnitus that does that for me.

Oh, just looked at your profile. Sorry, Costco doesn’t do London, I think. Never mind.

But you have a very good point, I hadn't considered cheap hearing aids as an option. At this point I can go all-in on the disabled style and it would be funny to reply to people saying "so you have hearing loss?" with, "actually, I hear too much" :)
