Hello, from your friendly neighborhood tax preparer! This is your reminder that there are 39 days until federal tax returns are due to the USA IRS on April 15, 2026.

It hurts to know how much folks pay to have their taxes done, because it's a confusing and difficult process to do on your own. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program offers free tax filing for most individuals. This is a safe, acredited federal program. Ask your local library for more info!

Volunteer with the IRS in your community to prepare tax returns for free with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs.

@I_am_a_plant
I’m a volunteer at a local VITA site. At 3 locations around town we prepare and file about 120 federal and state returns a week. A slim majority of our clients are retirees, but a rising number seem to be younger folks with multiple gigs, who are single parents. We see a lot of folks with various disabilities too. There are some limitations on what we’re allowed to do, so yeah, your library is a good place to go for more info on this.
@qurlyjoe I worked as a paid preparer for a few years, and have done taxes with VITA, too. It's such a great program that I don't feel enough people know about. Thank you for your volunteer service!
@I_am_a_plant you’re welcome, and the same to you.
I do intakes and outtakes, so I see people coming in anxious and leaving happy. Or they’re at least content that an onerous task that felt threatening and even overwhelming in some cases is done with, for another year, and it didn’t cost anything. One longtime client rolls up in his chair the 1st day we’re open, and every week after, with donuts for the volunteers. Gotta love it.
