The problem though is that he’s insane, so his response is to move to expand his powers and crush dissent, and all too much of the rest of the corrupt and compromised political establishment - the vaunted checks and balances - are, if not actively assisting him, conveniently failing to stop him.

Popularity only matters in a democracy.
