I just finished pulling up a bunch of the dead plants that were in my two standing gardens (I should have done this sooner, I know) and I had two little surprises.

First, one of those two bins has rich black soil, and the other has clay and dirt. So now I know which one needs more attention and which one just needs to be filled.

The other surprise is that, because I didn't pull my onions before winter, I have two really well grown happy patches of wild onions.

Also spent time pulling out a dead butterfly bush. It had been taken over by vines and several small oak trees growing through its underbrush. I will plant another one (or two). One thing I'm passionate about is keeping plants on my property to support pollenators and other wildlife and insects.

I misspoke - they're green onions that were allowed to run wild all winter. I'm in the US southeast, USDA zone 8a for reference.

@Caymon I’m in the same zone. Onions are the only things growing in my garden over the winter! I tried to plant some collards, but they aren’t growing.

@superflippy I'm sorry to hear about your collards!

The onions were such a fun surprise. I've long threatened to try a winter garden, but haven't intentionally put one together before. Maybe this is a sign to give it a try.

@Caymon @superflippy do it! I’m in central Texas (8b) and lettuce, brassicas, chard, parsley, onions, and garlic grow all winter. Maybe cover them when there’s an especially bad freeze.
