I was looking to buy a new phone. I was considering the #hmd Pulse Pro...but a phone I can buy on their website at the moment is going to stop getting patches in May 2027... eWaste in ~1 year after I buy it.

On Samsung's webite I can buy a A17 5g that they claim will get security patches until 2031.

Both are budget phones (I don't care about the specs) - but the difference in the patching schedules is shocking.

@jonquark hmm, I thought recent EU law mandated 5 years from withdrawal from sale (might not be in effect yet). But that is what triggered the longer life for the pixel phones announced last year

@ben I don't know whether the law doesn't apply yet or they are flouting it but they have the end date on their website (though you have to hunt for it pretty hard).

@jonquark I think a number of years ago Samsung had a reputation for being terrible with updates and they've really upped their effort
