reminder that blind people never suggest using altbot

in fact, of the multiple blind folks i have seen discussing auto-generated alt text, all have negative opinions on the matter

update: i have now heard from one blind person (in this thread) not negative on the matter, though only in a "better than nothing" kind of way

@matildalove the number of times I've had people blindly suggest something, or get mad at me for something disability related, without having even consulted a single impacted person on the issue is staggering

they really just assume they know how to help and do it without considering the ones in need, it's wild
@matildalove altbot is a mediocre solution for a world where no one cares very much, including you
@empathicqubit may i ask what brought this observation about re: me
@matildalove you yelled at my bot but when I asked you for help you ignored it.
@empathicqubit that's because i don't want to help your bot. i want to do what blind folks ask me to do, which is write alt text personally
@matildalove Do you have any advice for me, because I shut it off because of you

@empathicqubit my advice would be to embrace the human writing of alt text

also, i should apologize -- i have a bad temper sometimes, and yelling at you (via the bot) was unkind. i'm sorry.

@matildalove I have rewritten the alt text handling on the bot like three times because no one is ever happy with it, whether it's just a list of tags or generated with altbot

@matildalove
As a sighted person i can clearly see the captions are inadequate at best and often just wrong. For example, Snoop Dogg smashing a buzzer on a gameshow is not "a man in a hat sitting in a chair", and Conan the Librarian lifting a dork by his neck is not "a man standing who wears wrist cuffs"

Just my observation. I try to give the best text i can and if i didn't have time for it then i didn't have time to make a good post. (Several times i have been part way through describing my image only to realize this isn't funny like i thought or it doesn't show what i needed it to. I have abandoned posts that were ready to go until i started to make alt text and really realized what i was doing. I consider this a feature to increase post quality and I'm happy for it. (Plus the environmental death and intellectual decimation, yadda yadda yadda))

@AdaraAstin @matildalove Yeah, but if that's all you can do, use it anyway. Its okay to use Alt-bots if you feel like that's what you can do at the time, mentally or otherwise. I'm a blind person, but I am also pretty pro AI though.
