introducing my sister to #minecraft

The latest from me and my sister's Minecraft realm: I got around to crafting us leather boots so we could scale mountains and not freeze in the powdered snow. We climbed two of the continent's three tall mountain ranges and were in sight of the third when it got late and I had to log off. We visited a small patch of Pale Garden, which was lovely, I hadn't actually visited one.

We're in Peaceful mode so I'm always like, "This cool place is normally home to terrifying hostile monsters but we don't need to worry about it"

Introducing my sister to Minecraft, cont'd: beyond the mountains from the last post, I glimpsed a Woodland Mansion. Sent her a screenshot asking, "Did you do some building when I was offline?" (She didn't buy it.)

We explored every room of the mansion and freed several allays (little blue glowing fairy-like creatures) imprisoned there, and emerged with inventories packed with loot. A river nearby led through a lovely taiga (with a village in it!) on the way back home.

Revelations from my sister:

  • I told her she could tell the compass directions from (among other things) the sun. She said she didn't think the sun in Minecraft set in any particular direction. Note: it has visibly set in the same direction every day. (I do get her point though, there is no reason it should set in the west like on Earth)
  • She informed me that many of the stones and minerals from Minecraft are actually from real life. Yes, I am absolutely looking forward to when she mistakenly assumes that some thing made up for Minecraft is real, or vice versa.

(For context, she is 2 years younger than I am and we are both in the 35-44 age bracket)

Update from my sister: "I really didn't anticipate how much falling to my death I'd be doing in this game"

#minecraft #gameing

Tonight I finally finished the railway between spawn and our home village! It has several steep slopes which give it a rollercoaster-y feel at times. This was my sister's introduction to minecarts!

And, apparently, also learning what iron and gold are useful for… 🤦

She now wants a railway to the savanna in the north, which is at least twice as far. Obviously part of the appeal is the scenery on the way, but…it's probably time we went to the Nether.

Update: we went to the Nether! Just a quick jaunt but we found a fortress, crimson forest, soul sand valley, and basalt delta. I then tried to show her the Nether roof but it kept linking to the first portal or generating the portal high up but still below the roof. Shall have to work that out.

My sister's first reaction was "this place is a bit lava forward"

Oh, and in the soul sand valley I found a dried ghast which I will have to look up how to rehydrate, keep, etc.; I haven't had one before.
