Ralph: This is a bleak and yet also hopeful ending to the series. I've never read the book, but Piggy's death is heartbreaking. He was the rational child who merely wanted to bring some order among the anarchy that had arisen among the children, and he paid the #LordOfTheFlies

price for it.

Ralph's clearly traumatised response to the naval officer at the end when he says there were two deaths speaks volumes, too. It reminded me of the Empty Chairs At Empty Tables scene from Les Miserables. Just like Marius in Les Mis, Ralph's reaction #LordOfTheFlies

highlights the futility of conflict. He may have survived, but his friends are gone. He may be rescued, but it's not a victory. That loss still burns bright, and the emotional damage it has done to Ralph will leave a permanent mental scar. #LordOfTheFlies
