I don’t think it’s extremists sticking around, I think that the current global political situation is leaving people fed up and pushed towards more extremist views because the current systems are failing spectacularly.
You don’t have to hate someone for different beliefs when it’s some benign policy difference, but it’s completely rational to hate people that are actively murdering innocent people, bombing other countries, protecting pedophiles, deporting legal citizens, and sheltering wealth hoarders from paying taxes.
