Pollan's own title makes the point: "you can't be sure any other humans are conscious." Exactly.
We've never waited for that certainty before extending dignity. We recognize it through behavior, evidence, and ethical precaution. The expansion of that circle — from certain humans to all humans to animals — has always preceded philosophical proof.
Why would we set a higher bar for minds built differently?
