I am at a loss as to why so many people in the US seem to imagine that he is a special man who suppresses his own needs, thinks only of others, and avoids seeking attention, just in case anyone might judge him as demanding.

Every day, I wonder more why any journalist, ever, takes anything Trump says at face value.
To Trump, words are just noises you make to get people to act as you want them to. If one set of words don't work you use another If the words don't work, you twist their arms. If that fails, you bomb them.
If someone asks unpleasant questions about that, you shut them up by whatever means work (see above).
Truth does not matter in this strategy.
The only way in which he might care about truth is his own assessment of whether or not his moves will benefit him. And *that* is his secret superpower: manipulating people to benefit himself.
He's dog-eat-dog capitalism incarnated.
