I have entered discussion about #california #parentalControl on @fedora
I think a lot of misinformation or misconception is flying around. I think the California is doing it *right* way and finally it is solution not selling anonymity for protection.

It is a lot work to design it well and time is tight. But the concept it correct, OS should provide age group for it's user to apps. It doesn't need identification of the parent nor child IMO.

Even @system76 is wrong I their [blog post](https://blog.system76.com/post/system76-on-age-verification) IMO. If the parent could enter into device firmware settings (we used to call it BIOS) age group or date of birth of primary owner, protected by password the child doesn't know, it can be left to reinstalling by a supported OS like @fedora. It can then read and report age group even when kids have admin access on their machine, but still cannot disable correct age reporting. Solves it even for VMs. 🫡

@pemensik @system76 @fedora what about fixing the problem, not the victims?

We’re always targeting the symptoms, and that’s a moving target. The target should be platforms.

@rafasgj what is the problem in your opinion and where can it be fixed?

@pemensik the problem, in my opinion, is on the lack of will of platforms to control sensitive content that give them money.

I have no solution for this, and not enough political power to try to enforce things.

I’ve been a kid (with a computer). I have a teenager son. I know they will find a way to circumvent whatever measure is done.

And most of the solutions is just to take away liability, in the sense of “I did what I was supposed to do, so I can’t be considered guilty.”

@pemensik I’m not saying things don’t need to change, but things like “age control” don’t fix anything.
