@philnash I always start by thanking the organisers and asking the audience to give them a round of applause: a) organising a conference/meet up is hard work and, b) if gives me a chance to look around the room.

@peterwilsoncc That's pretty sneaky to use it as a way to check out the room! I like that. The organisers always deserve more thanks too!
