Years ago I was on a (dev) team and helping with interviews, and one question we'd ask sometimes was "What is your favorite piece of software, and why?" It was interesting because the reasons helped illustrate how applicants thought about software and what was important to them (UI, performance, community, features, etc etc etc)

I used to say Microsoft Flight Simulator, due to its enduring legacy and detailed simulation (and picking business software is yaaaaawn). But now I think Excel is my choice. What's yours?

@greg @micia People love Excel. 😌

My answer to this would probably be something like Doom, because of its extreme portability and tidiness facilitating that portability and moddability.

Or CheckMK, because it's so handy but still easy to set up.

So many answers depending on the criteria...

@greg @indigoparadox I feel constrained by Mastodon's lack of reactions 😩

I would say idTech3, or the SEGA Graphics Library, for their simplicity and elegance.
Or GCC for its immense impact on the world of software.
But its hard to pick a choice.
