Martyn Stewart has spent sixty years recording the sounds of the earth. 97,000 recordings. Four species now extinct since he recorded them. Two-thirds of his soundscapes damaged or gone.

He drilled microphones into trees at Auschwitz to hear if sound could bear the weight of what nature witnessed. Was imprisoned in Japan for documenting dolphin slaughter. Turned down $3.5 million because he didn't want the archive locked in a basement.

Trees emit crackles at 220 Hz from their xylem. He found it by accident while recording bats.
