Great piece on AI regulation, well informed by the past decades of internet regulation and decade of AI deployment (with plenty of references to both). https://www.modular.com/blog/ai-regulation-step-with-care-and-great-tact

Originally posted last month, I failed to notice at the time, saw shared again in light of US EO.

Personally, I think the biggest AI risk is that Mojo is not yet open source. 😉🔥

Another great piece on AI regulation, specifically on various policy options' compatibility with openness https://www.aisnakeoil.com/p/what-the-executive-order-means-for

Tiny quibble: I tend to think "defend attack surfaces" is more than just compatible with openness, and (though apples/oranges) ahead of antitrust in fostering openness. Insecurity makes shutting down openness seem a much more compelling option.

What the executive order means for openness in AI

Good news on paper, but the devil is in the details

AI Snake Oil

Noticed some progress/news on the "biggest AI risk 😉🔥" (Mojo not being open source) since above so made a play money question on when it would be https://manifold.markets/MikeLinksvayer/in-what-year-will-the-mojo-programm where I'll probably collect whatever updates/hints that appear til it is resolved.

March 20204 progess (std lib Apache-2.0): https://www.modular.com/blog/the-next-big-step-in-mojo-open-source

August 2024 news (Mojo & related product under non-compete terms): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYujSI_aoqk&lc=Ugy-QQjJ4PYNJyrRc354AaABAg.A7Wv5n61lVtA7j_dibRIk7 https://www.modular.com/pricing#:~:text=Will%20Mojo%20ever%20be%20fully%20open%20source%3F

In what year will the Mojo programming language implementation be Open Source?

Open source means the source code needed to build/compile/run Mojo programs is available under a license that permits anyone to freely use/modify/share the code for any purpose, a la https://opensource.org/osd Modular, the creator of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojo_(programming_language) has stated many times that the language would eventually be open source, but they cannot give a timeline, for example: https://docs.modular.com/mojo/faq#open-source https://www.modular.com/pricing#:~:text=Will%20Mojo%20ever%20be%20fully%20open%20source%3F https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYujSI_aoqk&lc=Ugy-QQjJ4PYNJyrRc354AaABAg.A7Wv5n61lVtA7j_dibRIk7 Core modules from the Mojo standard library have been open sourced as of March 2024 https://www.modular.com/blog/the-next-big-step-in-mojo-open-source about a year after Mojo was publicly announced. This question is about when the rest of the language implementation needed to run Mojo program is open source. If Mojo is not open source by the end of last year option, this question will resolve to "other".

Manifold

Reminded of this thread by Modular posting a "Senior Open Source Community Engineer" role https://www.modular.com/company/career-post?am9icG9zdDon6uIm3EDCAer6e0t4GByV&gh_jid=am9icG9zdDon6uIm3EDCAer6e0t4GByV

They have also reiterated many times a commitment to open source the compiler in 2026...looking forward to it.
