with the current situation, we gotta start thinking about using non-US OS for safety reasons.

my fear with BSD is mostly compatibility since even recent Debian struggled with my machine 😔 not sure how BSD development has been going
that’s completely understandable. it’s why i don’t use openbsd :/

https://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq5.html don’t know if building from source would run better?

modern debian worked GREAT on my 2004 desktop with (iirc) 512mb RAM (could have been 1GB actually, maybe 1.5GB, it’s been ages) and some Pentium 4 (this was 2022 or 2023 i think, but it was the newest debian at the time). i think i started with a minimal install and then used awesome window manager. don’t think i used a login manager but used startx or something. ran better than a lot of new computers these days

debian does really work well on older stuff, i am still hoping they fix my mouse issue (plus some other accessories, including my mic) so i can just ditch the mint with ubuntu to LMDE.
Here are two good distros hosted in Brazil:

I've heard of Big Linux a lot XDDD RegataOS too!
