The more time I spend with AI tools, the more I feel they will decimate the current version of the tech labor market. Meaning ~10% of roles significantly disrupted. A lot of tech skills considered valuable in 2021 are now just what computers do today.

The question is what comes next? For me personally, this is the first time in my career where I not only have a clear idea what startup I’d build but also that I could build it without needing to do the loathsome Silicon Valley fundraising dance.

@carnage4life I started a small software company 15 years ago by myself, with no funding or debt, and whilst it hasn't made me rich it has made me happy, and whether you write the code yourself like I did or not, it would be a lot easier today with AI support to do all the initial support and sales and marketing and legal and admin by yourself and avoid needing to spend someone else's money on hiring people to do it

It has never been easier to seize the means of production.

@carnage4life Nah, it makes *more* work for techies.

An example I've seen today: someone is working on a fix, and someone else posts what they think is an AI generated solution on the ticket. So the original developer not only has to complete their fix but they also have to read and respond to the AI-generated whatever-it-is.

@carnage4life would that disruption continue if the VC funding to anthropic and openai went away and real prices were charged?
@carnage4life For two themes of tech, AI will accelerate & boost: reducing friction and cutting costs. But for inventing new products, creating new markets, the role of AI is less clear.
