Then how would all the common tech gear exist if it weren't for hubs? Like imagine a desktop PC without a hub, then only a few USB ports/ethernet ports would exist on a given computer at all

Yeah, but these devices are only smart at routing traffic but still are sharing network bandwidth meaning if you have a 1 GbE connection, all devices must share that bandwidth just like hubs
