boxes like this in dublin get painted by artists as things like tarot cards, match boxes, scenes from around the city, etc: dublin.ie/live/stories/dublin-canvas/

it’d be cool to see street artists just decide to take them over directly with their own art/designs, so they’re not always going through a county/local council (which i assume involves sanitising any socio-political messages the artists might have)

Dublin Canvas: Colouring the county

Dublin Canvas is a community street art project bringing colour to the streets of Dublin by painting traffic signal boxes. Find out more.

In my town, the boxes by intersections that I assume control the traffic lights were all painted in the downtown and business heavy areas. They look nice. Then there’s the no-nonsense green ones in every other area. I know what I’d rather look at.

Is it plain green boxes with belligerent text?

I can see painting something effortful to make a statement, but not what’s in the picture.

Usually happens after the one that took effort is painted over.

I would have expected it to say “oh no it has paint on it” in that case.

The graffiti for its own sake in this context feels really crass in the same way that installing a fancy sign at a food pantry that says “Get a job.” does.

I’ll take the downvotes for that perspective, but you can have some money and support anarchist points of view at the same time.

Same with the ones in the SF bay area
