The BBC is to call for an end to political appointments to its board as part of sweeping changes designed to protect its independence.
@kibcol1049 Love to see it. Are we going to be taking a fire hose to the current board to clean things up? It’s sorely needed, and I’m not just talking about former Conservative government apparatchiks.
@bee @kibcol1049
End to political appointees? Only while there’s a *Labour* government.
@OneInterestingFact @bee Time to stop all political appointments and all funding. Then of course those enormously high salaries and sanitised reports will go too.
@kibcol1049 @OneInterestingFact I don’t agree with defunding them tbh. I’m for accountability. All sorts of hideously worse shit will flow into the space left behind by the Beeb if it goes.
@bee @OneInterestingFact I respect your decision, it used to be mine too. I've changed since I realised how much the presenters get paid and the recent bad editorial decisions. I've started to get my news from one of the many other sources available now. TV programs on the numerous other channels and platforms are much better these days. Sadly I no longer think I would miss the BBC.

@kibcol1049 @bee
BBC TV news is a joke, they might as well run Strictly and Traitors 24/7.

Radio 4 still has vestiges of real news and analysis but it’s increasingly difficult to separate from the politically mandated content that they apparently can’t refuse to broadcast.

@OneInterestingFact @kibcol1049 I think the light entertainment stuff is increasingly a figleaf over some terrible things that have been & are being done in the name of ‘impartiality’. Not the least of which is deciding on everyone’s behalf which opinions and points of view can be contained within the word ‘impartial’.
@OneInterestingFact @kibcol1049 @bee
Paragraph 1, yes. Paragraph 2, no.
BBC “news” is a bad joke.
I stopped listening to Radio 4 in 2016, because I got sick of shouting at my car radio for spewing constant bullshit.

@mysturji @kibcol1049 @bee

There was a long time when my commute was accompanied by Radio 3 for the sake of my blood pressure.
The Toady Programme and PM compare unfavourably to the daily heil particularly since Mishal Husein left. There are still a few decent programmes on R4 but the news/current affairs coverage rarely merit this description.

@OneInterestingFact @mysturji @kibcol1049 @bee Today has been owned by RWNJs certainly since they supported the #brexshit campaign and probably before then.

@OneInterestingFact @mysturji @kibcol1049 @bee For R4 without the news, there is.. 'radio 4 extra'.

But ya R4 could use a like decade-long rewind

@kibcol1049 @bee @OneInterestingFact But you can only (legally) watch (live) "TV programs" on other channels and platforms if you buy a BBC subscription ...
@TimWardCam @bee @OneInterestingFact Yes, that needs to change too. It seems a historical hangover that unfairly benefits the BBC over other platforms. It was perhaps fair when there was only 3 TV channels and no Internet, but it's not reasonable now, IMO.
@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] The TV licence no longer solely goes to the BBC. It funds S4C too and was tapped into for broadband infrastructure upgrades. BBC now has to fund World Service from it instead of getting paid by the Foreign Office. And the free licences for over 75s used to be subsidised by central government... until they stopped that.
@kibcol1049 @TimWardCam @bee @OneInterestingFact
Though the original reason was for the BBC to be a public good "to inform, educate, and entertain" unfettered by commercial considerations (or viewing figures), not be in competition with commercial broadcasters. That has fallen by the wayside, with the requirement to be the govt propaganda channel & putting out so much lowest common denominator/lowest bidder sludge to fill airtime.

@HighlandLawyer @kibcol1049 @bee @OneInterestingFact *And* it puts out advertisements.

On the radio it puts out advertisements for its telly shows, but does *not* tell you the price, which I consider unhelpful at best.

@kibcol1049 @bee @OneInterestingFact the BBC now ranks about seven or eight on my list of go to news sources.

I often find myself relying on the German company DW to give me a reasonably remote perspective and faction free angle on UK and US news
