i know it's not the most dire of things that are happening but noticing people addressing men and women, 'ladies and gentlemen' and pretending nonbinary people don't exist and it feels like we lost 20 years of language inclusion. anyone else notice that?
asking people who join ems for their pronouns is also feeling more important as we can no longer assume most people will be normal about it. plus we lost a long time member who had a pronoun meltdown
and the fucking number of people putting jokes in the pronoun field like 'deez nuts' is at an alltime high
i remember bristling at people addressing 'guys, gals, and nonbinary pals' but now they don't address us at all. well guess we weren't your pals, huh
anyway it's a good idea to keep explicitly mentioning things like pronouns in your communities as it shows you're still okay to be around and also does a great job of filtering out transphobic assholes who shouldn't get to go stealth just because the pendulum has swung back
i mean one if trump's first things back was to declare there are only two genders. people who i had thought were otherwise reasonable are agreeing with him on that?? i can't tell but it sure isn't a good look
i wrote this and had a shower and couldn't stop worrying about this thread and that people would say nonbinary issues aren't important, that we're too weird and cringey, that we're making things harder for the 'real' trans people by not trying to align with a binary to go stealth, that i didn't add enough disclaimers

@forestine anyone who says that shit about nonbinary people I will fucking pile drive upwards into the sun

Only I will survive

@forestine I read your thread and was so busy thinking thoughts about it I probably didn't click a single star. I appreciate this thread. I thought I had a picture of a pet tangled in yarn but instead have this retro meme as a thread liking token of appreciation. It has thread.
@forestine I think the good part of the fedi has you covered on this if you were to get this shit.
@theynege @forestine this, you have my axe etc
@forestine I've noticed this backslide a ton lately, and with the world where/what it is it definitely feels pointed! I'm with 100% you- it makes it so much more important for us to demand to be seen and for anyone who wants to be an ally to actually step up and say/do things to help make sure we are!
@forestine I'm a binary trans person, so I apologize if I'm overstepping with my take here but my theory is that the increasing visibility of trans people in general, regardless if theyre nonbinary or not, has created a fragility in cis people that then makes them double down on the binary, bioessentialist, intersexist gender system that they already know. Nonbinary people will always be the first erased in this, as history has repeatedly shown. Gender roles become even stricter for binary trans people, if theyre shown any grace at all. Gender roles become even stricter for people in general, cis or trans, but I digress. Binary gendered, especially cisgendered people, will immediately drop nonbinary people during these times of increased gender violence because it protects them, to shirk the gender binary is an immediate threat to the preexisting patriarchal system that has existed for millenia. I think it's much greater than just trump, but he's a violent perpetrator of that system nonetheless.
