There's nothing controversial about E2EE.

Unless you think it's controversial for private conversations to be.... private?

TikTok says it won't encrypt DMs claiming it puts users at risk

TikTok tells the BBC it won't join rival platforms such as WhatsApp and Messenger in using end-to-end encryption.

BBC News

@privacyint

Can't think of a government that wouldn't think that private conversations being private is controversial.

From the article itself:
"But the company has now told the BBC it believes the technology prevents police and safety teams from being able to read direct messages if they needed to."

This is the truth. But it is also part of the point of E2EE. And why governments hate it.

@kallisti FFS private means private. How hard is that to understand?!
@privacyint look - realise - anyone that does have shit to hide can ALWAYS do it regardless if law. Bad people can hide communications. These laws only
Impact normal people wanting normal privacy. Criminals can always do this. Laws only hit normal people.
@privacyint If you use E2EE, that means you have something to hide and you should therefore be arrested for questioning. If all of your conversations are recorded and made available to authorities request without a warrant, that proves you have nothing to hide and you can move freely (within the limits of the perimeter allocated to you).

Any question? Before you raise your hand, be aware that asking questions is considered highly suspicious!
@privacyint TikTok, whose entire business plan is to extract as much information as possible from its users, so they can sell it on / target them, doesn't want not to be able to extract all the information their users aren't giving them... That doesn't surprise me one bit.

@privacyint

It puts us at risk because if corporations and governments can't apply on us, we will miss out on advertising and arbitrary arrest.

@bonaventuresoft

@privacyint The idea that anything going through a company based in China and beholden to the Chinese government is going to be private is laughable, even if they claim to implement E2EE.
